The third generation of Boeing’s amazing 737 family was launched in the early 1990s as the 737 Next Generation, or 737NG. Virtually a complete redesign, the NG family introduced a completely new, larger wing, a much larger vertical fin, and many significant design improvements over the original 737-100/200 and the “Classic” 737-300/400/500 family of the 1980s.
Far and away the most successful variants of the 737 family, the NG has been in service since early 1998. Developed into four basic types - the 737-600, -700, -800, and -900, each except the -600 has been further developed into several subtypes. The last passenger NG was delivered in mid-2019, although production continues in the form of the P-8A Poseidon anti-submarine patrol aircraft for the US Navy and several foreign air arms. The 737-800 is the most produced variant, with 4,991 aircraft ordered.
